Founded by Santa Cruz Deputy Probation Officer Gina Castaneda in 2008, the Aztecas Soccer Program connects at-risk youth with a meaningful soccer team experience as a positive alternative to detention. Through weekly practices and games, the Aztecas Program provides a consistent avenue for at-risk youth to dive into their passion and forge pro-social connections, while learning essential leadership, sportsmanship, and anger management skills. Much more than a soccer team, Aztecas works to heal dangerous rifts and promote greater community safety by uniting youth with rival gang affiliations around their collective love of sport.
